Harajiri Falls

原尻の滝

Oita · Kyushu

A 20m-tall, 120m-wide curtain waterfall on the Ono River in Ogata (Bungo-Ōno), formed by pyroclastic flow from a Mount Aso eruption ~90,000 years ago. Nicknamed the 'Niagara of the Orient'; a 90m pedestrian suspension bridge crosses just downstream. One of Japan's 'Top 100 Waterfalls.'

Why we picked it

Called the Niagara of the East, a 120 m-wide curtain of water dropping over an old lava flow in the middle of farmland, with a suspension bridge across the front of it.
