Mount Sobo

祖母山

Miyazaki · Kyushu

A 1,756m peak straddling the Miyazaki-Oita border, listed among Japan's 100 Famous Mountains and named for the legendary grandmother of Emperor Jimmu. The mountain's granite crags host old-growth beech forest and alpine flora near the summit, with the Kitadani trailhead on the Takachiho side the most common approach.

Why it's hidden

A verified full-day hiking option that diversifies a Takachiho corridor otherwise made up entirely of shrines and the gorge, for travelers who want to get into the surrounding Sobo-Katamuki mountains rather than just the valley floor.

Best season
Year-round
April-June and October-November (peak hiking season); climbable year-round but avoid typhoon season and icy winter mornings
