Niigata · Chubu
A line of crab stalls on the seawall at Nou fishing port, and the largest direct market for beni-zuwai (red snow crab) on the Japan Sea coast. Boats land the catch a few hundred metres away, the crabs are boiled whole on site, and you buy one, have it cut open on a plastic tray and eat it at the benches looking out at the water — no restaurant, no cutlery, just a wet wipe. Beni-zuwai is landed here in autumn and spring; the Nou boats stop for January and February, when the stalls sell crab brought in from other ports.
