Beppu Park

別府公園

Oita · Kyushu

Beppu Park is a broad open green in the middle of Beppu, laid out over a former army site and now the city's main lawn — wide grass, a pine avenue and a pond, with the Tsurumi ridge closing the view to the west. It is where the town walks its dogs and eats its lunch rather than a sight in itself, which is exactly its use on a hot afternoon between baths. A small municipal art museum sits on the eastern edge, and the park's rose bed flowers in May.

Why we picked it

Beppu is visited entirely for its hells and its baths, so almost nobody registers that it also has one of the largest open parks in Kyushu.
