Akasaki Stalactite Cave

Akasaki Stalactite Cave

赤崎鍾乳洞

Kagoshima · Kyushu

A roughly 120-metre limestone cave on Yoron's southeastern coast, formed as groundwater slowly dissolved the uplifted coral reef that makes up the island. Inside are coral fossils, terraced 'rice-field' rock formations and named chambers such as the Gate of Happiness and the Snow Terraces; at the entrance you are lent a helmet and torch.

Why it's hidden

It is one of very few sea-coral caves in Japan and sits on the quiet Mugiya coast that most day-trippers skip for the famous beaches.
