Shodon Deigo Avenue (Kakeromajima)

諸鈍のデイゴ並木

Kagoshima · Kyushu

An avenue of some 80 ancient deigo coral trees — a National Natural Monument — lining the long Shodon beach on Kakeromajima, across the strait from Amami Oshima. The gnarled trees bloom scarlet in early summer above white sand and quiet coves; the hamlet is reached by ferry from Koniya on Amami.

Why it's hidden

Even travelers who reach Amami often do not continue across to Kakeromajima.
