五大堂

Miyagi · Tohoku

A small, ornately carved hall standing alone on its own tiny island in Matsushima Bay, reached by a red sukashibashi (openwork bridge) with deliberate gaps in the planks so visitors must steady themselves before entering. The current structure was rebuilt in 1604 by Date Masamune to commemorate his Sekigahara victory and is the oldest surviving Momoyama-period building in Tohoku (National Important Cultural Property).

Why we picked it

It's a detached sub-hall of Zuiganji and part of the general Matsushima Bay panorama, so casual visitors often walk past it as background scenery rather than treating it as its own stop.
