A volcanic crater lake formed by a steam explosion roughly 2,500 years ago, ringed by rare old-growth broadleaf forest that survived Miyakejima's repeated eruptions. The largest freshwater lake in the Izu Islands, and the archipelago's top birdwatching spot, home to the endemic Izu thrush (Akakokko).
