Takkoku no Iwaya Bishamondo

達谷窟毘沙門堂

Iwate · Tohoku

A cliff-face Buddhist temple built into a rock overhang south of Hiraizumi, founded around 801 by the general Sakanoue no Tamuramaro and dedicated to Bishamonten.

Why we picked it

Overshadowed by Hiraizumi's UNESCO sites like Chuson-ji, this dramatic cave temple sees a fraction of the visitors despite its striking cliffside setting.
