Kabushima Shrine

蕪嶋神社

Aomori · Tohoku

A small vermillion shrine founded in 1269 on a hill overlooking the Pacific, hosting one of Japan's largest black-tailed gull (umineko) breeding colonies from March to August. Rebuilt in 2020 after a 2015 fire, it anchors the northern end of the scenic Tanesashi Coast.

Why we picked it

Hachinohe is usually just a shinkansen transfer point for Aomori/Hakodate travelers; almost nobody detours the 15 minutes from Same Station to see the gull colony.
