Akakura Kanko sits on the south-east flank of Mount Myoko, an active stratovolcano whose cone gives the resort a long, consistently pitched fall line and a view straight down over the Myoko basin to the Sea of Japan on clear days. It is the older and more formal half of the Myoko Kogen ski area, centred on a 1937 grand hotel, and links across to the adjacent Akakura Onsen slopes on one ticket. Myoko takes some of the heaviest snowfall of any inhabited region on earth. Lifts usually run from mid-December into early April, with dates set by snowfall each season.
