Kumamoto · Kyushu
The jagged, twin-peaked member of the Aso Five Peaks (Aso Gogaku), rising to 1,433m at its highest point (Tengu-mine); unlike the smooth, symmetric cones around it, its serrated ridgeline was carved by heavy erosion of an older andesite stratovolcano predating the other central cones. From Aso's caldera floor its silhouette famously resembles two cat ears, giving the mountain its name ("neko" = cat).
How to get there
No direct bus to the trailhead; access by car/taxi (~40-50 min from JR Aso Station to the Aso City-side trailhead). Note: as of 2026 the Takamori-side routes remain closed for safety since July 2023 — only the Hakoishi-Tsuruioone route from the Aso City side is open.
