Kawachi Wisteria Garden

河内藤園

Fukuoka · Kyushu

A privately owned garden in the hills of Yahata-Higashi Ward, Kitakyushu, spanning roughly 10,000 sqm and home to over 20 wisteria varieties and 150 vines (some over a century old). Its signature feature is a pair of wisteria tunnels (fujidana), roughly 80-110m long, where cascading blossoms from white to deep purple form a living archway overhead.

Why we picked it

Went viral globally after CNN named it one of Japan's 31 most beautiful places, with the dense wisteria canopy widely compared online to the floating Hallelujah Mountains from Avatar — included as an undisputed, famous #1 rather than a hidden alternative; popularity surged so fast the garden switched to mandatory timed-ticket reservations.
