Beppu's Hells (Jigoku)

別府地獄

Oita · Kyushu

Beppu's Hells are seven geothermal pools kept as viewing sites rather than baths — among them the cobalt Umi Jigoku and the rust-red Chinoike Jigoku — and they are not all in one place, so getting round them involves moving between two clusters. A combined ticket to all seven is ¥2,400 for adults and they open 8:00 AM–5:00 PM. Allow about three hours in total.

Why we picked it

Many travelers focus on Beppu's onsen resorts and miss the stunning visual spectacle of the Hells.
