Sensuikyo Gorge

仙酔峡

Kumamoto · Kyushu

A steep gorge on the northern flank of Takadake, Aso's highest peak, and the main trailhead for hiking to Takadake and Naka-dake's crater rim. Roughly 50,000 Miyama Kirishima (Kyushu azalea) shrubs cover the slope and turn it bright pink each May and June.

Why we picked it

The main hiking gateway to Aso's highest peak, and a serious draw in late spring when the wild azaleas bloom and fill the car park. Outside that short season it stays quiet, and most Aso visitors never leave the crater road.
