Shingu Kumano Shrine stands outside Kitakata in the Aizu basin, and its worship hall — the Nagatoko — is a late-Heian structure of 44 pillars under a thatched roof, designated an Important Cultural Property. The hall is open on all sides, so the interior reads as a forest of columns. A ginkgo said to be 800 years old stands directly in front of it.
