Former Nokubi Church (Nozaki Island)

旧野首教会

Nagasaki · Kyushu

A brick church (1908) by master church architect Tetsukawa Yosuke, standing alone on Nozaki Island — now completely uninhabited (the last residents left in 2001). Just completed a 3-year restoration and reopened to the public December 1, 2025.

Why it's hidden

About as hidden as it gets — reachable only via a town-run boat (Hamayu) from Ojika Island, twice daily, with visitors required to check in with Ojika Island Tourism before landing since the island has no residents or services.

How to get there

Ferry to Ojika Island, then town boat 'Hamayu' to Nozaki (¥520 one-way); no boat reservation needed, but advance contact with Ojika Island Tourism strongly recommended.
