Kisakata & Kanman-ji Temple (Former Nine Lakes)
象潟・蚶満寺Akita · Tohoku
Once a lagoon dotted with roughly 99 pine-covered islets ('Nine Lakes of Kisakata'), until the 1804 Kisakata earthquake uplifted the seabed and drained it into a rice-paddy plain still studded with the old islet hillocks, viewable from Kanman-ji Temple's grounds. Matsuo Basho visited in 1689 and wrote his famous haiku about the scene. Best timed for june (flooded paddies mirror the old lagoon) or autumn harvest.
