Niigata · Chubu
An open-air museum built around the preserved Meiji-era mansion of the Ito family, once one of Japan's wealthiest landowning (gono) families; it houses around 6,000 antiques from Japan, China and Korea and a renowned pond-side strolling garden laid out over five years by Echigo garden master Tanaka Taiami. A 150-year-old wisteria in the grounds is illuminated at night in late April and early May.
