Hakusangu Shrine (Kaminashi)

白山宮

Toyama · Chubu

Hakusangu is a small Hakusan-faith shrine standing in the centre of the Kaminashi hamlet in Gokayama, reachable on foot from the roadside and free to enter. Its main hall was built in 1502 and is the oldest wooden building in Toyama Prefecture, designated a National Important Cultural Property in 1958; it sits inside a protective thatched shelter raised in 1760. The main hall itself is not normally opened, so visitors see the shelter, the approach and the cedar-shaded grounds. The kokiriko festival is held on the grounds on 25 and 26 September.

Why we picked it

Toyama's oldest surviving wooden structure sits unstaffed in a hamlet of a few dozen houses, with no ticket office and no coach parking, a two-minute walk from the road most Gokayama visitors drive straight along.
