Atsuta Shrine

熱田神宮

Aichi · Chubu

Founded, according to legend, in 113 AD, Atsuta Shrine is Japan's second-most revered Shinto shrine after Ise, set within a hushed forest of 1,000-year-old camphor trees in the middle of Nagoya. It enshrines the sacred sword Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi, one of the three Imperial Regalia of Japan, making it a site of profound national significance.

Why we picked it

Not a hidden gem — it is one of the holiest sites in the Shinto religion and matters because it houses one of Japan's three sacred Imperial treasures, drawing over 9 million visitors a year.
