Nakasu Yatai

中洲屋台

Fukuoka · Kyushu

The lantern-lit row of yatai food stalls along the Naka River on Nakasu, a sandbar island wedged between two rivers in central Fukuoka and one of Japan's largest entertainment quarters. By day it is an unremarkable strip of buildings; after dark stools appear on the riverbank and the stalls serve Hakata ramen, yakitori, oden and mentaiko tamagoyaki elbow-to-elbow with locals, with the neon of the district reflected in the water.

Why we picked it

Travellers often photograph the riverbank stalls and leave, missing that the yatai row is the front door to a whole named district of evening lanes — its depth is easy to underestimate from the waterfront alone.
