Fukuoka · Kyushu
The lantern-lit row of yatai food stalls along the Naka River on Nakasu, a sandbar island wedged between two rivers in central Fukuoka and one of Japan's largest entertainment quarters. By day it is an unremarkable strip of buildings; after dark stools appear on the riverbank and the stalls serve Hakata ramen, yakitori, oden and mentaiko tamagoyaki elbow-to-elbow with locals, with the neon of the district reflected in the water.
