Iwate · Tohoku
A volcanic highland straddling the Iwate/Akita border, where boardwalks thread a plateau of alpine marsh pools, dwarf pine and crater ponds — among them Kagami-numa, whose late-melting snow ring becomes the 'Dragon Eye' in early summer. The summit is reached by the Hachimantai Aspite Line, which is closed by deep snow from early November until it reopens in mid-April behind a corridor of cut snow walls.
