Sendai Toshogu
仙台東照宮Miyagi · Tohoku
Sendai Toshogu is a shrine to Tokugawa Ieyasu on the Tamatezaki rise in northern Sendai, founded in 1654 by Date Tadamune, the second lord of the Sendai domain. Its main hall, karamon gate, zuishinmon gate, transparent fence and stone torii are national Important Cultural Properties, and the stone torii is the oldest in Miyagi Prefecture. Unlike most Toshogu shrines, its worship hall and main hall are separate buildings. A stone-lantern-lined stairway drops from the gate to Miyamachi-dori, which runs straight for more than a kilometre below.
