Devil's Washboard (Oni no Sentakuita)

鬼の洗濯板

Miyazaki · Kyushu

A national natural monument of tilted, wave-eroded sedimentary rock ridges that encircle Aoshima Island and extend roughly 8km along the coast, resembling a giant washboard at low tide.

Why we picked it

Most visitors only photograph it from the Aoshima bridge, but walking the exposed rock shelf at low tide to explore its tide pools of starfish and crabs is a quieter, lightly-used experience.
