Natadera Temple

那谷寺

Ishikawa · Chubu

A Shingon-sect (Koya-san) Buddhist temple built into wind/wave-eroded rock formations sitting atop an ancient seabed, founded 717 by the monk Taicho. Matsuo Basho visited in 1689 (Oku no Hosomichi) and composed a haiku here, marked by a stone monument; the grounds are officially part of the 'landscapes of Oku no Hosomichi'.

Why we picked it

Not obscure (JNTO features it), but genuinely lower-crowd than Kanazawa-tier sites — infrequent bus service (~every 2 hrs) naturally caps foot traffic; multiple sources contrast it favorably against crowded Kenrokuen.
