Mt. Yufu Front Trailhead (Shomen Tozanguchi)

由布岳正面登山口

Oita · Kyushu

The main trailhead for climbing Mount Yufu (1,583m), a dormant twin-peaked volcano nicknamed the 'Fuji of Oita' that towers over the Yufuin basin. The trail climbs through pastureland and broadleaf forest to a fork called Goyagoshi before reaching the East and West peaks; a round trip takes roughly 4-5 hours. Best timed for spring through autumn (Apr-Nov); avoid winter for ice/snow on upper trail.

Why it's hidden

Mt. Yufu is the backdrop of nearly every Yufuin postcard, yet almost everyone photographs it from town rather than climbing it. This front trailhead is the standard starting point for the ascent.
