Kehi Jingu Shrine

氣比神宮

Fukui · Chubu

The ichinomiya (chief shrine) of former Echizen Province and guardian shrine of the whole Hokuriku region, first recorded around 702 AD. Its vermilion Ōtorii, rebuilt in 1645 from timber washed ashore from Sado Island, is one of Japan's three great wooden torii alongside Itsukushima and Kasuga Taisha.

Why we picked it

One of Japan's three great wooden torii stands here, an easy walk from Tsuruga Station, yet the shrine is overshadowed nationally by Itsukushima and Kasuga.
