Takasakiyama Natural Zoological Garden

高崎山自然動物園

Oita · Kyushu

A wild-monkey sanctuary on the slopes between Ōita City and Beppu, home to roughly 1,500 free-ranging Japanese macaques split into rival troops, viewable up close at scheduled feeding times. Long-running ethological research site since the 1950s.

Why we picked it

Not a hidden gem by traffic, but it's the prefecture's undisputed #1 wildlife attraction and the only nature/animal encounter of its kind in the current lineup, which otherwise skews entirely onsen/temple/castle-town.
