Kappa Bridge

Kappa Bridge

河童橋

Nagano · Chubu

A wooden suspension bridge over the Azusa River and the symbol of Kamikochi, looking straight up the valley to the Hotaka range in one direction and to the smoking cone of Mount Yakedake in the other. The present bridge is the fifth on the site, rebuilt in 1997; the first suspension version replaced a cantilever crossing in 1910.

Why we picked it

It is the opposite of hidden — in Golden Week and October the approach is nicknamed the 'Ginza of Kamikochi'. Walk fifteen minutes upstream and the crowd is gone entirely.
