Hyotan Onsen
ひょうたん温泉Oita · Kyushu
Hyotan Onsen is a day-use bathhouse in Beppu's Kannawa district, open since 1922, whose water arrives hot enough that it has to be cooled before anyone can get in — and it is cooled without adding a drop of cold water, by running it down long slatted wooden channels called yuzake that stand in the open air. That is what the site means by 100% source-flow. Inside there are indoor and open-air baths, sand baths, steam boxes and waterfall baths where the water falls from about two metres onto the shoulders, plus private family baths that can be booked by the hour. It is a working local bathhouse rather than a resort spa, a few minutes from the Kannawa steam vents.

How to get there
