The only ferry to Hegurajima was knocked out by seabed uplift in the January 2024 earthquake, and although sailings from Wajima resumed in May 2026 they are weekdays-only and restricted to island residents and reconstruction workers, so general visitors cannot currently reach the island. Hegura Island is a renowned stopover for rare migratory birds, making it a paradise for birdwatchers. The island's unique ecosystem provides a critical habitat for various species, especially during migration seasons.
