For most visitors Mount Yufu is a viewpoint rather than a hike — its distinctive twin peaks (East 1,580 m and West 1,583 m) are best appreciated from the Sagiridai observation deck on the Yamanami Highway or from the grassy trailhead meadow at Shomen Tozanguchi, since reaching the summit is a half-day climb of roughly four and a half to six hours round trip. The final push to the West Peak crosses the Shojido rock wall on fixed chains, and the crater-rim circuit adds another hour of exposed scrambling, so anything beyond the lower slopes needs proper boots, an early start and a full day set aside. A short stop works well: pull in at Sagiridai for the head-on view of the peaks and the panorama over the Yufuin basin, or walk twenty minutes up the open grassland from the trailhead for the mountain at close range. Entry is free year-round, but from November through spring the upper mountain carries snow and rime ice and is for equipped winter climbers only.
