Nagoya Castle

名古屋城

Aichi · Chubu

Built in 1610 by Tokugawa Ieyasu as a strategic stronghold guarding the Tokaido road, Nagoya Castle was once one of the largest castles in Japan, famous for the pair of gilded shachihoko (mythical dolphin-tiger) ornaments on its roof. The surrounding Honmaru Palace, a meticulous wooden reconstruction of the original Momoyama-era interiors, is now considered one of the finest palace restorations in the country.

Why we picked it

Not a hidden gem — this is Nagoya's single most recognizable landmark and a required anchor for any Aichi itinerary; it matters because it anchors the city's samurai-era identity the way Osaka Castle anchors Osaka.
