The Mangrove Primeval Forest on Amami Ōshima is one of Japan's largest mangrove tidal forests, where the Sumiyō River fans out into a maze of green channels before meeting the sea. Visitors paddle kayaks or canoes among the arching roots, home to crabs, mudskippers and rare birds.
