Iwase House

岩瀬家

Toyama · Chubu

Iwase House is a five-storey gassho-zukuri residence at Nishi-Akao in southern Gokayama, open to the public with its upper floors accessible. Measuring 26.4m across, 12.7m deep and 14.4m high, it is the largest gassho building in the Gokayama and Shirakawa-go area and was designated a National Important Cultural Property in 1958. The roof frame was assembled without nails, using rope and twisted-wood bindings. Opening hours shorten to 9:00–16:00 from December to March.

Why it's hidden

It stands at the far southern end of Gokayama, past the point where most tour routes turn back, so the largest gassho house in either valley is routinely skipped.
