Unzen Jigoku
雲仙地獄Nagasaki · Kyushu
Unzen Jigoku is a field of thirty-odd steaming sulphur vents in the middle of the Unzen onsen town, crossed by a raised walkway that runs right between the fumaroles so the steam blows across the path. The ground is bleached white and the air smells strongly of sulphur; boiled eggs cooked in the vents are sold at the edge. The site is also a memorial — Christian converts were executed here in the 1620s, and a stone cross marks the spot.
