Obi Castle Town

飫肥城下町

Miyazaki · Kyushu

Preserved Edo-period castle town of the Ito clan (280 years, 14 generations) — Kyushu's first registered townscape Preservation Area, often called the 'Little Kyoto of Kyushu'. Samurai residences, carp-filled streams, stone walls, and a working mini-archery range.

Why we picked it

Genuinely comparable in atmosphere to famous castle towns (Kakunodate, Kurashiki) but almost entirely absent from foreign-visitor itineraries; still a working town, not a reconstructed tourist set.
