Gokayama Washi-no-Sato

Gokayama Washi-no-Sato is a papermaking centre and roadside station on the Shogawa road in the Taira district of Gokayama, where the region's handmade washi is produced and sold. A gassho-roofed experience hall lets visitors make a sheet of paper themselves, and a gallery covers the history of Gokayama washi alongside papers from elsewhere in Japan. There is also an information desk, a shop and a restaurant. Papermaking sessions run 10:00–15:00 and must be booked in advance.
