Fukuman Kokuzoson Enzoji Temple

福満虚空藏菩薩圓藏寺

Fukushima · Tohoku

A Buddhist temple founded in 807 that stands on a rock bluff directly above the Tadami River in the town of Yanaizu, west of Aizuwakamatsu. It is counted as one of Japan’s three principal Kokuzo Bosatsu temples, and its main hall is reached by a stone stairway from the town below. Yanaizu is the origin of the akabeko red cow charm, and cow figures stand throughout the precinct. Gates open earlier from April to November than in the December-to-March period.

Why it's hidden

A major pilgrimage temple in a small riverside town on the Tadami Line that almost no foreign itinerary reaches.
