Taisho Pond

A still, pale-blue pond formed in 1915 when Mount Yakedake erupted and dammed the Azusa River, its surface studded with the bleached trunks of drowned trees and mirroring the mountains at dawn.

- No admission fee — Kamikochi has no entry gate. Private cars are banned year-round, so access is by shuttle bus from Sawando (adult ¥1,600 one-way, ¥3,000 return; children half price).

- Kamikochi Bus Terminal (no railway) — private cars are banned beyond the Kama Tunnel, so access is the shuttle bus or a taxi from the Sawando or Hirayu car parks · Taisho Pond is its own shuttle stop, one before the terminal
