Kunozan Toshogu Shrine

久能山東照宮

Shizuoka · Chubu

An elaborately gilded Momoyama-style shrine on Mount Kuno overlooking Suruga Bay, built in 1617 as the original burial site of shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu before his remains were later enshrined at Nikko; most structures are National Treasures or Important Cultural Properties.

Why we picked it

Overshadowed by Nikko Toshogu despite being the original, older shrine; reached via a scenic cable-car ride from the Nihondaira plateau or a 1,159-step stone stairway — a dramatic approach most Tokyo-based visitors never make time for.
