Kamikochi
上高地Nagano · Chubu
A flat-bottomed glacial valley at 1,500 m along the Azusa River, walled by the Hotaka peaks and the smoking cone of Yakedake, walkable end to end on level trails from Taisho Pond up to Myojin and Tokusawa. It is Japan's most protected alpine basin: no private cars, no new building, and no access at all for five winter months.
