Rakan-ji Temple

A Zen temple founded in 1337 built directly into a sheer rock cliff on Mount Rakan in Nakatsu's Hon'yabakei area, where caves hold over 3,700 stone rakan (arhat) statues, including Japan's oldest set of 500 rakan.

From JR Nakatsu Station south exit, take a Taikoku Hokubu bus toward Yabakei/Morizumi Onsen/Bungo-Mori to the Rakanji-mae stop, then a short walk/climb to the temple gate.
