Aomori · Tohoku
Hirosaki Castle keeps a compact three-storey tower of 1611, one of only twelve original castle keeps left in Japan, set among moats, stone ramparts and corner turrets in western Aomori. The park around it is open all year, and its roughly 2,600 cherry trees make it one of the country's most celebrated blossom sites, usually peaking in late April. The tenshu itself is closed while the stone ramparts are rebuilt, so the visit is of the grounds rather than the interior.
