Mifuneyama Rakuen

御船山楽園

Saga · Kyushu

Mifuneyama Rakuen is a large landscape garden at the foot of the cliffs of Mount Mifune in Takeo, Saga, laid out in the Edo period as the villa garden of the local domain lord. Walking paths circle a pond and climb through woodland directly beneath the rock face. Cherry and azalea plantings fill the slope in spring and the maples are lit at night in autumn, and the garden adjoins the Takeo Onsen hot-spring quarter.

Why we picked it

Takeo is a stop most Kyushu itineraries skip between Nagasaki and Fukuoka, and the garden is a short taxi ride from the station rather than a walk.
