O-tsumago

大妻籠

Nagano · Chubu

A tiny hamlet on the Nakasendo about a kilometer south of Tsumago, lined with weathered wooden minshuku and farmhouses. In the Edo period it served as an 'ai-no-shuku', a rest settlement between the official post towns of Tsumago and Magome. Its handful of dark-timbered inns give a quieter, less curated glimpse of the old highway.

Why it's hidden

It sits just off the busy Tsumago-Magome stretch, so most walkers pass straight through without stopping to notice how untouched it is.
