Nunobiki Kannon (Shakusonji)
布引観音 釈尊寺Nagano · Chubu
Shakusonji, known locally as Nunobiki Kannon, is a Tendai temple built into a cliff face above the Chikuma River west of Komoro. Its Kannon hall is carried on tall timber pillars set against the rock, and the wooden shrine housed inside it, made in the Kamakura period, is a National Important Cultural Property. The temple is the 29th site on the Shinano thirty-three Kannon pilgrimage and is the source of the proverb about being led to Zenkoji by an ox. Reaching it takes about twenty minutes uphill on a mountain path from the car park below.
