会津武家屋敷

Fukushima · Tohoku

An open-air museum in eastern Aizuwakamatsu built around a full-scale reconstruction of the 38-room residence of Saigo Tanomo, chief retainer of the Aizu domain. The grounds also hold relocated period buildings including a water-powered rice mill and a magistrate’s office, with rooms furnished to show samurai household life. It sits on the road between the castle and Higashiyama Onsen. Hours are slightly shorter from December to March.

Why we picked it

A large site that most visitors pass on the bus to the onsen without stopping, since Tsuruga Castle absorbs the available time.
