Towada Art Center

十和田市現代美術館

Aomori · Tohoku

A contemporary art museum opened in 2008 in Towada City's Art & Craft district, showing site-specific installations by artists including Yayoi Kusama, Ron Mueck, and Erwin Wurm in individual glass-walled rooms, plus outdoor sculptures lining Kanchogai-dori avenue.

Why we picked it

Lake Towada draws the crowds, but Towada City itself -- a separate castle town roughly 30km away -- and its internationally acclaimed art museum are largely bypassed by day-trippers focused only on the lake.
